Dutch households sharply increased savings in 2019


Dutch households’ savings in banks increased sharply in 2019, reflecting higher net incomes and the need to offset the effect of negative rates.

According to the Netherlands Bank (DNB), at the end of 2019, the country’s banks held €368 billion ($403 billion) in household savings, €13 billion more than a year earlier, a 3.5% increase.

Higher net deposits at €12 billion account for the bulk of the increase, the highest level since 2009. In contrast with a decade ago, credited interest at €1.2
